Veltheim Method for Lymphatic Drainage (VMLD)
BodyTalk places great emphasis on the health of the lymphatic system and the movement of interstitial fluid within the body tissues. BodyTalk’s Veltheim Method for Lymphatic Drainage (VMLD) is a dedicated, stand-alone session for which clients may make appointments.
VMLD is safe, effective and relaxing, and supports the lymphatic system from a unique perspective. The technique is not focused on lymph but on moving interstitial fluid — the fluid between cells. It is a highly effective approach to encouraging healthy functioning of the lymphatic system that produces powerful physical and emotional shifts for clients. VMLD incorporates a unique ‘kinesthetic visualisation’ technique that defies the traditional Western understanding of how the lymphatic system works.
VMLD techniques are performed directly on the body. The practitioner uses their hands and fingers with short, light, gentle glides over the skin and muscles of key parts of the lymphatic system — the neck, armpits, midline of the chest, abdomen, and upper legs near the groin. VMLD Sessions take around 45 minutes to complete.
VMLD utilises knowledge of the lymphatic system from both a Western and Eastern perspective. An understanding of this integral component of immune health allows the practitioner to educate the client on the importance and significance of a healthy lymphatic system and how disease in this system can manifest into numerous physical, mental, and emotional symptoms.
In 2019, Sahan trained in VMLD with Dr Tracey Clark. Based in Canada, she is a Board Certified Manual Osteopath with a Doctorate and PhD in Integrative Medicine. She is also an Advanced Certified BodyTalk Practitioner, a BodyTalk Access Trainer, and an Advanced Certified BodyTalk Instructor.
The lymphatic system is a network of delicate tubes throughout our body that act like the body’s ‘waterways and sewerage system’, and the lymph nodes are its filters. It drains the fluid that leaks out of the body’s cells and tissues and empties it back into the bloodstream. This fluid is called lymph. It is pale white and contains waste products formed in the tissues, fats and proteins, bacteria, and certain types of cancer cells.
The lymphatic system is an integral part of our immune system. It helps manage the fluid levels in the body, react to bacteria, deal with cancer cells, absorb some of the fats from the intestine, and deal with cellular waste products that otherwise would result in disease or disorders.
In general, the lymphatic system does well in circulating lymph fluid around the body and filtering out what is not wanted. Still, some circumstances like illness, certain medications, a sedentary lifestyle, lack of sleep, increased stress and poor nutrition can cause it to build up and remain stagnant in the body. At that point, lymphatic drainage techniques can help.
Much like the sewerage system in a house or a city, lymph must not be stagnant in the body. Congested lymph flow not only allows diseases to form but can also make it extremely difficult for the body to heal from existing diseases and conditions. When the lymphatic system is not developed well or is sluggish, congested or damaged by surgery, radiotherapy or tissue damage, swelling in parts of the body may occur — most commonly the legs or arms. When this swelling lasts more than a few months, it is called lymphoedema. When it is not functioning well, the lymphatic system may have a role in obesity, Crohn’s disease and other disorders.
Sluggishness, congestion, acne, stiffness, headaches, feeling run down, puffiness and excessive swelling are signs that a person’s lymphatic system could benefit from draining. If you have concerns, please read the information under “Contraindications” and consult your GP before making a VMLD appointment.
VMLD Session benefits will differ depending on each individual. Even a moderate improvement in one area of the body, or one system of the body, can catalyse a chain of events that address multiple issues throughout the body.
VMLD may help to:
- Reduce swelling and water retention and increased circulation, particularly for those with lymphedema, and for those individuals where lymphedema has resulted from losing lymph nodes through, for example, breast cancer treatments and surgery.
- Decrease the swelling of plugged ducts in breastfeeding women.
- Boost immune responses and the body’s overall immunity: Help fight off infections, heal and recover faster from the cold and flu, and help those individuals who are immune-compromised or those who have been ill for extended periods, for example, with glandular fever or chronic fatigue syndrome.
- Accelerate recovery after surgery or injury by reducing swelling, and helping with tissue regeneration and the minimising of scarring.
- Alleviate pain associated with swelling and joint inflammation and thus provide pain relief for conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia and lupus.
- Improve skin: Cleaner, healthier pores and reduce acne, skin swelling and puffiness. Reduce the appearance of cellulite, scar tissue and stretch marks.
- Lower stress and fatigue. Boost energy levels.
- Improve metabolism and digestion. Boost weight loss.
- Improve hormonal balance.
- Provide relief for migraine episodes.
- Recover faster post-exercise.
- Recover faster after travelling and from jet lag.
- Beat insomnia.
Rates indicated on this website are per session, not per hour. VMLD sessions are scheduled for up to 50 minutes. On average, they take around 45 minutes, depending on your state of health and how quickly your body assimilate and process the changes made during the session.
The length of the session is not indicative of the quality or complexity of the session as your body decides exactly what it needs and can handle. In this way, you are sure to receive the care that is most appropriate for you.

Consent required
In wholeheartedness to help, many people book BodyTalk sessions for loved ones without their permission. For all BodyTalk sessions booked by a third party, Sahan will request verbal permission from the client at the time of the session.
BodyTalk sessions aim to bring every individual to a place of balance in their life. This balance is unique and individual to them. Not everyone feels that their life is out of balance or that they need repairing. From their unique perspective, they may be coping, or they may not want to make any drastic changes in their life right now.
Talking someone into receiving any form of therapy may prove to be challenging for you, and unpleasant for them. Instead, allow the person to observe the positive changes in your own life from BodyTalk and other similar therapies. That may be the inspiration they need to make an empowered decision in the future.

You will need to change out of your clothes for the session. Much of your body will be covered with a sheet and towels, except for the parts that need to be worked on. You have the option to wear thin underwear or a bra, and you will still be draped with a sheet and towels; however, most clients find the clinic setting safe and nurturing to fully enjoy VMLD without any undergarments.
The practitioner will leave the room, allowing you privacy to undress completely. You will then lie down on the treatment table and cover your body from your feet to the top of your chest with the bedsheet provided. Once you are ready, the practitioner will return to the room and drape your upper chest with towels and move down the bedsheet to your hips to tuck you correctly.
You are offered a safe environment to feel amply comfortable to expose enough skin for the lymphatic drainage technique and be confident enough to relax while the work is done.
During the session, the bedsheet and the towels are moved to work on key areas of the lymphatic system: the abdomen, upper legs on either side of the groin, neck, shoulders and clavicle, and along the breast bone. Both men and women will have their chest/breasts and groin covered at all times with towels; however, men often ask to be bare-chested. For the breast and upper-body lymph drainage technique, it is necessary to have a clear path of exposed skin along the midline of the chest. Each breast will be draped with a small wash towel with space in between the breasts to allow room for the technique. The client will use their hands to hold down each towel during the technique.
Likewise, when working on the upper legs on either side of the groin, just enough skin will be exposed on each leg at a time.
The BodyTalk® System does not prescribe a set number of sessions for an individual. At the end of the session, your body will be consulted and asked when, ideally, the next session should be. It is entirely up to you if and when you would like another session. It’s common for clients to visit once every 2 to 3 months for general maintenance, or more frequently if they are in the process of addressing a chronic disease or condition.
The question of what the contraindications are when dealing with lymphatic drainage often arises. Since we are encouraging body fluids to circulate, many wonder if we can distribute such things as cancer cells from one area of the body to another area and thereby promote the spread of cancer: Which is how conservative Western medicine views the situation.
Cancer
From the viewpoint of BodyTalk, cancer is not necessarily a contraindication for VMLD. On the contrary, draining the interstitial fluid containing stagnant chemicals and hormones helps the healthy cells in the area in their attempt to stay healthy.
Healthy cells and tissues rely on a good flow of fluids around them to bring vital ingredients to stay alive. They also need a good flow of fluids to remove waste products like acetic acid and carbon dioxide — which if not removed promptly, will cause the cells to malfunction and eventually mutate or die.
The stagnant flow of interstitial fluids and lymph can contribute to the development of cancerous cells and their continued proliferation. Improving this flow allows the remaining healthy cells to stay healthy, and bring in the relevant components of the immune system to help combat the cancerous cells.
IMPORTANT: If your medical doctor has said that you should not receive any physical lymphatic drainage or massage-type techniques, then that must be honoured. If lymphatic work comes up as part of a regular BodyTalk Session, the techniques will only be performed energetically over the body, without contacting the body directly.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy is not a contraindication.
During Menstrual Flow
The only contraindication for VMLD is during heavy menstrual flow. Although most VMLD techniques are safe to perform during this time, deep abdominal drainage has a risk of increasing the flow even more. A lighter technique can be done over the abdomen, which tends to help reduce the associated pain, or the entire procedure can be done energetically over the body, without direct contact.
